Meet Resistance with Self-Care

Over the years, I have become more comfortable with scheduling time on my calendar to care for myself. But since the pandemic began, many of my go to healthy indulgences are either unavailable or difficult to access. In response, I learned to tailor self-care to my current state of being. I try not to generalize and think, “This always used to work for me,” because I now see how each season brings a set of new conditions that require fresh, in-the-moment ideas.

I continue to discover the value of rest and ways to flow with the natural rhythms of life. For me, I notice my need for it most when I’m in deep concentration on an important task and for whatever reason, feel unable to move forward. For hours, I may find myself stuck and repeating the same actions over and over, frustrated at circumstances not working successfully as before. In those moments, exhausted, I finally surrender, and breathe deeply or go for a much needed walk. I observe and follow the subtle sense in my body to stop and answer a faint call to be in the flow. Instead of meeting internal resistance with more resistance and staying locked in battle, I move away, relieve the tension, and do something gentle and loving for my body. I have learned that sometimes, what seems like a setback could be a healthier choice or one that brings new understanding, surprises, and expansion.

What are you resisting? Is it time for you to move in a different direction or incorporate new experiences more suitable for this season? Notice any hints, shoves or stampedes of internal resistance and as an experiment, respond with curiosity, calm, and self-preserving action. Before your blind spots prevail, are you open to seek recommendations from a trusted expert or advisor with your best interest at heart? That may provide the objectivity you need to get out of your own way and possibly even enjoy yourself! I know, in the moment, being in the flow may feel tough and as though you’re moving away from your ultimate goal. But, to that I say consider the season and be curious about what you may be resisting. From there, choices you make to allow more rest and peace of mind may prove to be your best step forward.
